The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation has two full-time staff-members and operates with professional support donated by The Mitchell Family Corporation.

Marilu Hastings, Environment Program Director

Marilu Hastings has served as the Environment Program Director for the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation since March 2008. She is responsible for developing and implementing the foundation's funding strategies and associated grant portfolio. The portfolio currently involves supporting clean energy and water policy, and sustainability, in Texas.

Prior to her current position, Ms. Hastings was Director of Program Integration and Senior Research Scientist at the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) where she was employed for twelve years. At HARC she specialized in examining the complex interactions between social, corporate, and political behavior and environmental protection. She focused on developing integrated research initiatives related to sustainability science.

Ms. Hastings has over twenty years of experience analyzing an array of policy issues related to sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, hazardous and solid waste management, water resources, market development for recycled products, and corporate sustainable development. She has worked in the public and independent sectors, as well as in collaboration with industry groups and companies.

Ms. Hastings is a trustee of the Regional Endowment for Sustainability Science and is on the Science Advisory Board for the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago. She is co-chair of the Texas Environmental Grantmakers Group. She earned a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin, and she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Duke University.
