Education and Opportunity

As children of humble origins, George and Cynthia Mitchell's personal experiences taught them that the combination of a stable homelife, a nurturing community, and a good education are vital to opening doors to opportunity and elevating people to fulfill their potential. In their personal, professional, and philanthropic lives, they have assisted countless families struggling to raise children through tough times and they have put scores of young adults through college and graduate school. Though never a spoken preference, in their pattern of generosity Cynthia usually favored the healthy household environments and pre-K through 12th grade education of young children and teens, while George emphasized the importance of higher education. This program builds on their legacy.

In recent years the Mitchell family's philanthropic efforts in the area of Education and Opportunity has focused on Galveston, Texas, George's hometown. The philanthropy has been directed primarily through G-1 Corporation, a community relations and marketing arm of Mitchell Historic Properties, headed by George and Cynthia's daughter, Sheridan Lorenz.
